About This Nassau Tour
Although opened in 2014, the Heritage Museum of The Bahamas has relics dating back to prehistoric times. You can even browse a replica 1900s general store, complete with original wares and advertising. Other gems displayed throughout this meticulously restored 1850 structure include curated pieces from the Duke of Edinburgh, Winston Churchill, and Nelson Mandela, all luminaries who spent time in Nassau.
The next leg of your experience still keeps the past on your radar. Because the Graycliff itself is a landmark listed in the National Register of Historic Places. In fact, it was constructed more than 100 years before the building housing the Heritage Museum of The Bahamas. Captain John Howard Graysmith was a buccaneer who plundered ships along the Spanish Main. Apparently, his haul was sizable. More than enough to build his Graycliff Mansion in 1740.
Where there's smoke, there's a cigar. Take a stroll through the Graycliff Cigar Company to observe master torcedores hand-roll the boutique producer's signature blends including Original, Professionale, Emerald, Crystal, Espresso, Chateau Grand Cru, Heritage Royale, and G2.
Ready for a sweet ending? Because it's time to learn about the art of artisanal chocolate production and the rich lineage of the regional cocoa beans used in Graycliff Chocolatier's collection. Decadent confections include candy bars, filled bonbons, truffles, and cocktail pops. Of course, it would be absolute torture to see and smell all the deliciousness without getting a taste. So you'll also sample these Bahamian-made treats to round out your Graycliff experience. Yum!
A torrid Lord and Lady
Although historic artifacts now take up residence in the old Mountbatten House, it once played host to Lord and Lady Mountbatten. Although the Lord boasted royal descent and many illustrious titles, including Admiral of the Fleet, Viceroy of India, and First Sea Lord, he and his wife led a rather scandalous personal life. He once said, "Edwina and I spent all our married lives getting into other people's beds." Wonder what role Nassau played in all this naughtiness…
