Sail and Snorkel The Kittiwake Wreck and Cayman Reef
Grand Cayman (George Town), Cayman Islands
- Sail the cat: Your ride's a 65-ft. catamaran with a silky smooth disposition, a friendly and informative crew, all your snorkeling gear, and a full cash bar.
- Snorkel the Kittiwake: Snorkel the Kittiwake: Technically, it's not a wreck. This 251-ft., five-deck sub rescue ship was deliberately sunk to create an artificial reef. Today at its shallowest point it's 15 feet below the surface.
- Reconnoiter the reef: Cayman's most colorful coral reefs are in shallow water and brim with marine life. We'll stop at one of them for a second, awesome snorkel.
About this Grand Cayman (George Town) tour
In 1945, the USS Kittiwake was launched into a life of submarine rescue, torpedo recovery, and other deep-sea duty. She worked around the globe, even aiding in the 1986 recovery of Space Shuttle Challenger debris from the waters off Florida.
In 2011, the decommissioned Kittiwake began a second noble chapter as an artificial reef off Grand Cayman. Five decks high and pierced with openings that admit light and scuba divers, she rests on the bottom with her superstructure just 15 feet below the surface – making this a dramatic yet easy snorkel.
You'll sail along Seven Mile Beach to get to the Kittiwake site; after a safety briefing and a bit of history about the Kittiwake, you'll be ready to don mask and snorkel, hop in the water, and take a look at the old girl.
Even though she's only been there a few years, she's blossomed. Expect to see a variety of reef fish, larger species like Goliath groupers, and countless sponges, sea fans, and invertebrates.
After the wreck tour, you'll reposition to a natural reef that's been here several millennia longer. It'll feel like you just entered the ultimate aquarium, where hard and soft corals, crustaceans, and a rainbow array of reef dwellers abound. Often the tiniest fish are the most colorful – and the most ferocious at guarding their little patch of reef.
During the sail back to shore, the bar will open. You can savor your adventure, toast the Kittiwake, and celebrate the seafaring life.
Is coral an animal or a vegetable?
Yes. It's both. The coral polyps themselves are simple, tentacled animals related to jellyfish and anemones. But they rely on the photosynthesis of microscopic algae, which are plants, to survive. These algae live and work within the digestive systems of the polyps, thousands of which mass into colonies, together excreting a hard exoskeleton substance that forms the structures we call reefs. It's a fragile and incredibly important ecosystem.
