About this Grand Cayman (George Town) tour
Sea turtles are to the Cayman Islands what penguins are to Antarctica. They're the reason Christopher Columbus called this place "Las Tortugas" when he arrived in 1503. They're on the Cayman flag, coat of arms, and money. They're also the stars of Cayman’s star attraction – and this GoBe tour is your all-access, behind-the-scenes pass.
Founded in 1968 and still the world's only sea turtle farm, Cayman Turtle Farm's focus has expanded well beyond its original mission: to provide a sustainable supply of turtle meat for human consumption, thereby reducing pressure on the wild turtle population from eager poachers. Today it's one of the world's leading marine parks, with a robust research and education center dedicated to the conservation of not just green sea turtles, but other fragile and endangered species. You'll be making acquaintance with quite a few of them.
Of course, there is some controversy re: the raising and selling of turtle meat. But Cayman Turtle Farm believes strongly in the positive role it plays: reducing the financial incentive for poaching, and educating the public (especially the young public) to become strong stewards of sea life.
The Farm's 362-member turtles are doing their job, too. Over 31,000 have been released to the ocean, where they help replenish the wild population. And females released here over two decades ago are coming back to nest on Cayman's beaches.
No matter how much you think you already love and respect nature, this adventure will certainly kick that up a notch. So bring the kids and have a blast.
The ghosts that came back to life
Some of the flora at Cayman Turtle Farm is just as endangered as the fauna. Two rare Ghost Orchids, rescued from an island forest in 2006 and dormant for two years, now bloom annually on the park's Nature Trail. Basically invisible, they don't have anything you'd call a leaf or stem, just some spindly roots embedded in tree bark. So their flowers seem to come from nothing, suspended ghost-like in midair.
