Hike to Middleham Falls
- Middleham Falls: Cascading down over 250 feet, into a bracingly cool pool of its own making, it is one of Dominica's most spectacular waterfalls.
- Rain forest hike: Overflowing with untamed views, and exotic species, you'll be spellbound by one of the most remarkable rainforests in the Caribbean.
- Morne Trois Pitons National Park: A World Heritage Site full of mud ponds, geysers, and amazing landscapes.
About this Roseau tour
With 15 named waterfalls on Dominica, it's not easy to stand out. Middleham Falls does, as one of the most spectacular, as well as the island's tallest. Quiet and narrow in the dryer parts of the year, it is thunderous and unruly during the rainy months.
Notice the extensive variety of trees on your hike – as many as 60 species in one 10-acre plot of rainforest. But because as little as 10 percent of the sunlight penetrates the treetops, only the most determined seedlings take root, leaving the forest floor relatively clear.
You'll pass near Tou Santi (Stinking Hole). Gaseous and sulfuric, this collapsed laval tube lives up to its nose-pinching name, perhaps explaining why no large mammals live nearby. Why all the exotic birds put up with the stench, no one knows. Maybe the Purple-throated hummingbird, Rufous-throated Solitare, and Jaco Parrot suffer olfactory impairments.
As you soak up the foul and fantastic beauty of this place, celebrate its virgin forest, its volcanoes and waterfalls, its peaks and canyons, its bubbling boiling lake – but please leave nothing but footprints, take nothing but pictures, and kill nothing but time. Morne Trois Pitons National Park's physical uniqueness is why it is a World Heritage Site.
Leap into the frigid pool at the base of the falls and you'll need to rediscover your breath. If you're healthy, the shock of cold water has many reputed health benefits: reduced inflammation, soothing sore muscles, and evidence suggests that it helps burn away any love handles. Beats doing crunches.
Staying at a hotel or on a cruise ship, please meet the dispatcher outside the Visitor Information Center, opposite the Cruise Terminal. They will have a sign with your name on it. Docking at Woodridge Bay? Meet outside the Security Gate, on the right.
