- Local cuisine: Wrap up with a taste of authentic local cuisine, including rum punch and fresh fruit.
About this Roseau tour
Take if from us, paddling down stream is A LOT easier than sea kayaking. So make a day of lazy paddling down the Layou River and see the town for which it is named. Hit some light rapids, and channel your inner adventurer. You’ll end up in the Caribbean before you know it.
In addition to your river-to-Caribbean kayaking adventure with hot springs, photo ops, and dips in both the Layou and the Caribbean, you'll be rewarded at your journey's end with local Dominican cuisine, including fresh-picked fruit and rum punch.
Influenced by the island's Creole and British roots, local fare features an immense variety of fruits and vegetables, as well as fresh-caught fish. Should you happen to hear a conch blast, it's likely signaling a fresh catch of red snapper, balou, dorade, or tuna.
Locals also love green Calaloo soup. Made from the leaves of the dasheen plant (taro in the Pacific) – the plant's roots are starchy, similar to beets and potatoes, but its broad leaves (once boiled) provide the soup with a delicate, green, velvety texture.
One hot little warning: if you order authentic Dominican cuisine, know that many dishes feature sauces made from curry and Scotch bonnet peppers, measuring between 100,000 and 350,000 Scoville heat units. Compared to the jalapeno's paltry 1,000 to 4,000, you're in five-alarm-fire territory.
Take me to the river, drop me in the Caribbean
Locals boast they have a different river for every day of the year. But of the 365 rivers on Dominica, only 83 are truly significant, with the remaining waterways falling into the rivulet or brook category. The Layou River is no such brook. Dominica's longest, it rises in the interior of the country, drawing from the island's largest watershed, and delivers you to the Caribbean at a brisk clip, sometimes reaching speeds of 30 grains per minute.
Staying at a hotel or on a cruise ship, please meet the dispatcher outside the Visitor Information Center, opposite the Cruise Terminal. They will have a sign with your name on it. Docking at Woodridge Bay? Meet outside the Security Gate, on the right.
