About This Puerto Plata Tour
How could anyone keep a jaw-dropping phenomenon like the 27 Charcos (Waterfalls) de Damajagua a secret for so long? These dreamy limestone mini-lakes, replete with aquamarine waters, have existed since a geological fault formed a several-miles long canyon eons ago. But visitors have only jumped and shimmied down them in an organized way since 1994.
Until 2004, the cascades didn't have many visitors. It wasn't until Joe Kennedy, the grandson of Robert F. Kennedy, volunteered there as part of the Peace Corps and helped to create a sustainable tourism model to aid the nearby community. Locals were trained in safety procedures and taught about the area's environment so that they could serve as tour guides.
With the grant money that Kennedy secured, a visitor center and restaurant went up, giving more work opportunities for the Dominicans. From there, the waterfalls of Damajagua took off. It's now something everyone wants to do in Puerto Plata. There, you'll get hotel pickup, priority access to the cascades, a delicious Dominican buffet lunch, and safety equipment.
Allow your trained guide to take you up the trail to the twelfth waterfall, where you'll soak in the jungle atmosphere and its lush vegetation. Then the fun begins - leap, slide, and swim in these natural pools most people only see in fantasies, all the way down to where you started. Waterfalls like "The Virgin," "La Tinajita," and "The Corkscrew" await you.
Fun for visitors, help for the community
A portion of the entrance fee to the Damajagua falls, adding up to US$1, is funneled into a development fund that helps the nearby Dominican communities. With roughly 3,000 travelers coming each month, it's been quite successful. The locals have plans to build a new school library, renovate a church, and construct much-needed footbridges over a river.
