About this Puerto Plata tour
Like many of its Caribbean island neighbors, the Dominican Republic has a colorful mosaic of people from different ethnic groups. In fact, 73% of the population fall into the racially mixed category. With a piquant blend of Spanish, French, African, and Native American influences, the country boasts a fascinating cultural presence.
While the Spanish language, merengue and bachata, and baseball unite most of the population, many Dominicans live modestly. But as you will witness on this unique tour, their warm and generous disposition will enchant you, with both the good-natured tour guides who will take you on the open-air 4X4 tour and the smiling denizens you'll meet in the villages along the way.
Starting with a pickup from your hotel, zip through the busy and heavily trafficked areas of Puerto Plata and into the serene countryside, where the true spirit of the people lives. Observe the unspoiled verdant rural landscape and postcard coastal views on this breezy ride. Stop for some grownup refreshment at a rum shack to taste different varieties and enjoying a yummy coco loco.
Later on, walk and relax on the sugary sand of Playa Guzmancito, then enjoy a traditional Dominican lunch of chicken, rice, and salads. There, treat yourself to the mamajuana, a popular native drink made from various plants, ingredients of the creator's choosing, and of course, rum. It's supposedly an aphrodisiac, which may explain why Dominicans are such a happy people.
Yo-ho-ho and a bottle of rum
Rum, the signature liquor the Caribbean, was created as a by-product of the lucrative local sugar production. The growers usually tossed the resulting substance of molasses away because most people didn't like it. But some creative (and probably thirsty) individual mixed the syrupy stuff with cane juice and distilled it into the spirit you can find anywhere on the islands today.
