About this Castries tour
When you're home, you know the places you like on a night out. But you're not home. That's the whole point of vacations, of course, but still – how do you plan the party? You rely on someone who knows the territory. In this case, GoBe. We know where all the best spots in the party city of Gros Islet are. And we're going to show you our town on an old-fashioned bar crawl, handling all the logistics. All you have to decide is, should I have another?
You'll sample local spiced rum at Irie Bar, and watch locals skillfully craft wire art or challenge each other's wits in dominos. Meet Wendy or the staff at the Beach Inn, and enjoy a complimentary homemade rum punch aptly named "Wendy's Special Brew."
At the Corner Bar, you'll sample "the spirit of St. Lucia": Bounty Rum. A local favorite distilled in the area, this rum is medium-bodied and made with ripe sultana fruit, vanilla from the oak, and a hint of spice. If anything is going to get you in the spirit of the festivities, it's this.
A short journey to Cas-en-Bas beach lands you at Marjorie's Bar. Grab a rum punch, and walk the beach to find the remnants of an old U.S. rocket booster that washed ashore in 1994. It makes you think: Should I have another shot of rocket fuel?
"Bartender – another preservative punch, please!"
Besides its most obvious purpose, rum has had some interesting uses in history. Until 1970, the British Navy gave every sailor a daily ration of rum, originally to ward off scurvy. (It was the bit of lime juice that actually did the trick.) And when surgeon William Beatty preserved the body of Admiral Nelson in brandy after the Battle of Trafalgar, he was reprimanded by the press – rum was thought to be a better preservative.
