About This Belize City Tour
"If only we could get away," you've said. "Just the two of us." And you sigh, thinking about what it would be like to be really, really away. No phones. No work. No email or texts. Nothing to connect to but each other.
Well, an isolated river in the middle of a dense rainforest is about as away as you can get. And while it's not technically just the two of you – an experienced navigator guides your raft and supplies interesting local yarns along the way – the messages here come in chirps and squawks, not characters on a four-inch screen.
In a country half-covered by 4,000 square miles of lush, undisturbed rainforest, this section of Northern Belize bisected by this river is home to its most diverse wildlife. You may share your trip with deer, puma, ocellated turkeys, falcons, crocodiles, and manatees, among other creatures.
As you proceed down the river, you'll pass a number of local farms and stop at a riverside camp for a fresh bite to eat. The only notifications here come from over 500 species of birds, monkeys and reptiles welcoming you on your jungle adventure.
Swimming in the rivers of Belize is fine, except for one day of the year: Good Friday. Many in the country's Christians believe those who enter the water on this holy day will turn into mermaids. Though it's probably a tall tale invented to keep rowdy children in line, most Belizeans still refrain from swimming on Good Friday.
