      About this Belize City tour

Look! Up in the sky! It's a bird. It's a plane. It's you?

Such is the refrain you'll hear in your head as you fly across the lush canopy of a tropical rainforest and not just any rainforest. The Nohoch Chen Archaeological Park was once the stomping grounds of the ancient Maya. One can only imagine what they'd make of humans flying more than a hundred feet above the floor of their home, whooping it up with gleeful screeches. Perhaps they'd think us one of their countless gods.

It's one thing to learn about the flora used by the ancient Maya in their rituals and medicines; it's another thing entirely to zip through it and see it up close. You make it to one platform, and as soon as your heart stops pounding, it's time to make an even longer run.

For all their ingenious engineering achievements pyramids and vast cities with sophisticated road networks even the Maya never imagined such a fast-moving and scenic way to get around.

When the Maya looked up to the sky, it wasn't to check for zip-liners

The ancient Maya were known for developing the most accurate pre-telescope astronomy of their time. Their meticulous observations of celestial bodies and methodical recording of astronomical data, however, had more to do with astrology than science. Maya priests used the information gathered to understand past cycles of time in order to create future prophecies.
