About this San Pedro, Ambergris Caye tour
It has a funny name, but this cross between scuba-diving and snorkeling gives you the best of both worlds at two of the world's premiere spots for underwater exploration. Best of all it’s really easy so you spend less time learning and more time seeing cool marine life.
Depending on weather and other conditions, you could visit Mexico Rocks or Hol Chan Marine Reserve. The former is a recently designated Marine Protected Area. Because it's protected by the Belize Barrier Reef, there are very few big waves, leaving the water calm and well lit, with exceptional visibility. Even better, it's less than 12 feet deep, with some of the coral reaching close to the surface.
With your SNUBA gear on and your underwater camera in hand, you're ready to see butterfly fish, bluestriped grunts, anemones, flame scallops, tube worm shrimp, and dozens of other colorful (and colorfully named) creatures.
Hol Chan Marine Reserve, "Little channel" in Mayan, is one of the most popular diving, snorkeling, and SNUBA spots in Belize, and is part of the MesoAmerican Barrier Reef, the fourth largest reef in the world. Three square miles, with a channel running through it, it's about 30 feet deep and 80 feet wide, with visibility approaching 100 feet. It's home to more than 160 species of fish, 40 different corals, five sponge species, three species of sea turtle, and more colors than you can possibly have names for.
Paging Dr. Coral
You probably know that coral reefs are a precious natural resource facing a variety of threats. What you may not know is that coral could save your life someday. The organisms that create the hard reef surface are used to treat cancer and HIV and to make orthopedic and cosmetic surgical implants. In fact, coral is already being farmed to create material for bone grafts.
