About this Antwerp tour
If there's two things Belgians like, it's beer and waffles – sometimes at the same time. You can treat yourself to both on this GoBe tour, starting at the Duvel brewery.
Founded in 1871, Moortgat Brewery was soon producing some of the best beers in Belgium – and Belgians are very particular about their beer. When World War I ended, Mr. Moortgat named his top-of-the-line beer "Victory Ale." Not long after, a local shoemaker proclaimed the beer's potent aromas to be "a real duvel." (Meaning "devil" – perhaps he was drinking all night with fellow cobblers, and telling the missus that the devil made him do it.) Inspired, Moortgat re-named the beer – and soon, the brewery. Duvel beer has been bringing out Belgians' devilish side ever since.
On this guided tour, you'll learn everything there is to know about the brewing process, from the right blend of hops to proper pouring. Sit back and savor the results before part two of the tour: waffles!
Antwerp's cityscape is dotted with waffle carts, waffle trucks, and waffle restaurants. Everywhere you look, you'll find waffles. In the city center, you'll quickly understand the appeal as you choose your toppings – berries, bananas, chocolate, ice cream, sugar, whatever strikes your fancy. If you're used to waffles that pop out of a toaster, you won't want to leggo of these.
A handy way to come up with a name
According to legend, a giant named Antigoon lived near the Scheldt River in western Belgium, collecting tolls from anyone looking to cross. If they didn't pay, he'd cut off one of their hands and toss it in the river. A young man named Brabo slew the giant, cut off its hand and tossed it into the river. Hand werpen, meaning "throw a hand" was the result. So give Antwerp a hand for one of the best name origin stories ever.
