About This Opatija Tour
The true magic of Istria lies inland. Here, medieval hilltop settlements, stone-built villages, and unspoiled nature create an almost mythical landscape. The spectacular views are matched only by the thrill of leaving paved paths behind to explore an area that's becoming known as "The Other Tuscany."
You'll travel on rustic paths through a panorama of orchards, olive farms, and vineyards – lots of lovingly tended vineyards. Croatia is now a hotspot for the wine-obsessed and you'll ride past fields with some of the country's best grapes. Wine Spectator honored Istria as one of 2015's "10 Best Wine Travel Destinations," so don't say goodbye to Opatija until you've sampled a glass of Istria's newly famous wine.
Istria's dramatic past drops a few hints in your path. Those hilltop settlements you see have been fortified repeatedly as power shifted during the region's turbulent history. The old stone towns rising above green fields like pictures from a storybook are proud vestiges of centuries past.
You may also see occasional road signs in Italian that tell you Istria, once occupied by Italy, still has influences of its culture. Italian is still spoken in many homes and, as you may discover at lunch, the cuisine is reminiscent of Italy and uses local ingredients like garlic, polenta, and olive oil. Just as it blends fine wines, Istria combines history, cultures, and scenery to offer up an energizing taste of Croatia.
After two exhilarating hours exploring, all your senses are running wide open. You've gone places few others do. Seen sights unreachable by any car. Now it's time for lunch with your fellow adventurers. You'll be ready to share the experience, and savor the moment.
On the record, miniature to massive
Istria is home to Hum, holder of the Guinness World Record for world's smallest town. Its second Guinness Record is for the world's largest truffle, discovered by a local out with his truffle-hunting dog in 1999. It weighed almost three pounds and could have fetched the price of gold (today that would be more than $50,000). But the truffle was prepared and eaten in the village where it was found. Let's hope they gave the dog a taste.
