About this Limassol tour
They're a long way from the Alps, but the Troodos Mountains of balmy Cyprus climb to 6,400 feet and have popular winter ski resorts. They also have wonderful villages terraced into their foothills.
One in particular is famous for eco-friendly artisanal products that uniquely capture the flavors and aromas of Cyprus. You'll definitely enjoy stopping to smell these roses.
The brilliant pink Rosa damascena andndash; whose petals yield essential rose oil and rosewater came to Cyprus long ago from Mesopotamia. But it was the vision of one Agros schoolteacher in 1917 to transform the town's future by cultivating Damask roses commercially here. The roses and the village's fame flourished.
Today, the House of Roses, run by a proud third generation of the Tsolakis family, offers a full line of organic rose-infused products for sale all made from the luscious fields that surround the shop. You'll learn how pottery for the storage of the essences is hand-made, how a perfumed candle is produced, and you'll taste unexpected concoctions like rose aperitifs and liqueurs, rose water, and rose wine.
But there's more to Agros than roses as you'll see when we visit Niki's, the thriving shop and factory where more than 60 types of spoon-sweets and marmalades are homemade in the traditional Cypriot way.
You'll also see how seasonal fruits are transformed into mouthwatering delights. And be introduced to karydaki (young tender walnuts) and soutzouko the classic Cyprus grape-and-almond treat. Sharpen your sweet tooth, because sampling is encouraged here.
So is bringing home goodies for everyone you know.
Cypriots are known for their warm, welcoming nature. But someone forgot to tell that to the Cyprus mouflon a wild horned sheep found only in the Troodos and Paphos Mountains. Mouflons are super shy and agile, so keep your eyes peeled, though you'd be very lucky to spot one. But in Varisela, up near the north coast, some 300 of them roam the streets. And bars. And houses. The town's been deserted since the island's partition in 1974.
