About this Limassol tour
Once owned by Cleopatra and long-renowned as the birthplace of Aphrodite, the island of Cyprus has a history of seduction. Greeks, Persians, Egyptians, Venetians, Turks, and Brits are among the cultures who've been irresistibly drawn here as control changed hands throughout the millennia.
On this guided GoBe excursion, we focus on the 400 years or so when Rome ruled the roost. After a scenic drive through lush citrus country, you'll find yourself standing at the ruins at Kourion a true ancient goldmine of a town, its treasures still being unearthed by archeologists today.
Established on this Mediterranean-facing hillside long before the Romans arrived, Kourion flowered during their occupancy then was shaken into ruins by a massive earthquake in 365 A.D. Lucky for us, many of its building details including some very intricate mosaics have been found in miraculously preserved shape.
Visits to the thermal baths, the restored 3,500-seat outdoor theater (still used today), and the luxurious rooms of the House of Eustolios, a wealthy Roman townie all tell a vivid story of what life must have been like here back in the day.
Up at the far end of main street, the cluster of columns still standing from Apollo's Temple create an imposing presence. Typical of the cultural mashup that is Cyprus, the Greco-Roman god Apollo fused destinies here with the Cypriot god of the woodlands, Hylates.
All the ancient conveniences
Sheltered from the elements by a sweeping curved roof, the ruins of the House of Eustolios provide Kourion's most intimate glimpse inside the life of a noble 4th-century Roman family. Decorated with elaborate mosaic floors, Christian inscriptions, and even a young woman symbolizing "Creation," this home had it all: meeting and banquet halls, dressing rooms, bathing pools, solariums, and state-of-the-art plumbing including hot running water.
Please proceed pier side and look for our GoBe Representative with the displayed logo sign.
