About this Liverpool tour
Follow the Fab Four's long and winding road from local skiffle band to the most celebrated recording artists ever. Along the way, we'll stop for photos (and chills) at the places they wrote about, played in, and made forever famous.
Like Penny Lane, where John and Paul used to meet to catch the bus into town, and where John's mum Julia once worked as a cinema usherette and a waitress. And Strawberry Field, an orphanage John lived near and felt a special connection to. He and his childhood mates played in the woods behind, which John nicknamed "Strawberry Fields."
The Cavern Club at 10 Mathew Street may be the holiest of Beatles shrines. Once an air-raid shelter, then a jazz club, the Cavern hit it huge in the '60s when the young Beatles played its brick-arched cellar stage some 300 times – including the night in November 1961 when future manager Brian Epstein first heard them. The Stones, Yardbirds, Hollies, Kinks, Who, and many other legends played here, too.
But the best part for daytrippers will be the Beatles Story, the world's largest permanent exhibition devoted to the lives and times of John, Paul, George, and Ringo. This immersive multimedia experience puts you inside the screaming throngs welcoming them to America, on to old Mathew Street with music roaring out of the Cavern Club, behind the scenes at Abbey Road Studios, through the psychedelic era with Sgt. Pepper, and on a walk through the Yellow Submarine. The journey ends with a moving remembrance of John Lennon.
Yesterday, all his photos seemed so far away
Once there was a 16-year-old newspaper assistant who was sent to cover a concert tour of the Beatles – before Beatlemania hit. They were opening for a cute pop sensation named Helen Shapiro. With unfettered access, young Paul Berriff captured stunning images of the Four in unguarded and unplugged moments – then more or less lost them up in his attic for 50 years. Today, his "found" photos are back to where they always belonged: at the Beatles Story.
