      South Coast Jet Ski Journey

      Porto Vecchio, Corsica, France
From (USD) $533 Per Jet Ski
      Highlights
      • Escalier du Roi d 'Aragon: View the 187 steps leading from the sea to the clifftop that were said to have been carved into the rock in a single night.
      • Grain de Sable: Put your engine on idle as you pause to admire this 800-year old formation, a solitary stack of limestone that stands like a sentinel off the coast of Bonifacio.
      • Iles Lavezzi: Explore this archipelago of rocky islands set amidst a marine reserve, and observe the variety of flora and fauna found nowhere else.
      About this Porto Vecchio tour

Gazing up at Bonifacio's white limestone cliffs from your Jet Ski, you might think this part of Corsica resembles a ship carved from the rock. From above, the fortified city keeps watch, a silent sentinel looking out over the Mediterranean.

The natural history of this dramatic promontory is etched in its chalk-white limestone, soaring hundreds of feet into the sky. Uniquely sculpted by the waves, the limestone cliffs are a geological anomaly on an island largely comprised of granite and other magmatic rocks.

Your guide will point out the other distinctive features along the coast, from the natural to the man-made. Explore grottoes carved by the waves and winds, such as the Grotte de St-Antoine. View the 187 steps leading up the cliff from the sea – the Escalier du Roi d 'Aragon – which were, according to legend, hewn over the course of a single night in 1420 during a siege by the King of Aragon.

Capo Pertusato is home to both a lighthouse and a solitary stack of rocks, the Grain de Sable (grain of sand), which broke off from the rugged cliffs more than 800 years ago. After stopping to marvel at the untamed, wind-beaten, marquis-covered beauty of the Pointe de Sperone, ride out to the Iles Lavezzi, a dramatic archipelago that lies in the midst of a marine reserve.

      The Tragedy of the Sémillante

There have been countless shipwrecks over the centuries in the Straits of Bonifacio, but none as deadly as the wreck of the Sémillante. This 60-gun French frigate departed Toulon for the Crimea in 1855 with 700 men and huge stores of gunpowder aboard. Caught up in a vicious storm, she was driven onto the rocks of Île Lavezzi and exploded, killing all aboard. Two small cemeteries on Lavezzi hold all remains recovered, and a monument honoring those who perished stands on a cliff overlooking the strait.
