About this Batumi tour
Southern hospitality is a longstanding tradition in the U.S. state of Georgia. But in the country of Georgia, it's an even longer-standing tradition. Georgians actually have a national epic poem, dating back to the 12th century, which states that the true measure of a person's wealth is the depth of their friendships. So every guest there is treated as a new friend. Not a bad policy!
Join GoBe on a unique tour of Batumi that includes a visit inside the home of a local family, where you'll have a chance to experience that fabled Georgian hospitality firsthand. In the brief time spent with these gracious hosts, you'll learn a bit more about the country, its people and lifestyle, and the deep-seated traditions that define the national character. It's sure to be a memorable meet-up.
But then, you'll collect plenty of other landmark memories on this tour, too. Like your drive through Old Batumi, gridded into square blocks by Roman tradition. The legendary four-mile-long seaside park and promenade locals call "the Boulevard" – with its art installations, colonnades, cafes, and lush greenery. And the spectacular views of the sea, the city, and its steep landscape from atop Mt. Batumi.
You'll also remember your visit to a pair of churches only recently restored as holy spaces after years of Soviet era disuse: tiny Church of St. Barbara resting in the shade of a quiet park, and the Church of the Virgin Mary with its outstanding stained glass and antique organ.
Their rebirth is a simple and moving statement of Georgian pride, and the enduring power of tradition.
The churches you see in Georgia today deserve a medal for perseverance. Centuries of shifting ethnic factions, religions, and occupying influences take their toll on houses of worship. When the Soviets moved in after WWI, for instance, quaint St. Barbara's Church became a military hospital; it reopened as a church only in 1997. The Virgin Nativity Church was used as an archive and a high-voltage laboratory for a while, before being reconsecrated in 1989. Some 5,000 were baptized on reopening day.

Most shops are open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 8 p.m., but some stay open until 9 p.m. The local currency is the Georgia lari and it is divided into 100 tetri. Euros and dollars are accepted at most establishments.
