About this Bonn Tour
Are you ready to time travel? If so, you've arrived at the perfect place. Thanks to its strategic placement along the Rhine, Bonn was founded as a Roman military settlement in the 1st century BC. It thrived as a spiritual and trading center in the Middle Ages. And it served as the capital of West Germany from 1949 to 1990.As you stroll its streets with your in-the-know guide, you'll become familiar with this incredible city's history, music, art, and architecture.
You'll "ohhh" and "ahhh" at the detail and distinction of many of its Romanesque-, Baroque-, and Rococo-style buildings, but there's one building that is sure to win your heart. The awe-inspiring, five-towered Bonn Minster. Completed in 1239, this Roman Catholic papal basilica is visible from just about anywhere in the city. Step inside its historic walls as your guide provides the narrative of its formation, renovations, and the story of the two Roman officers who were beheaded on the site upon which it was built.
Of course you can't come to Bonn and not celebrate its most famous person. Ludwig van Beethoven, one of the world's most influential composers, was born here in 1770 and his birthplace is now a museum at Bonngasse 20. When you walk through its doors, you'll discover a great number of his documents, letters, and other personal belongings that remain intact, almost as if he never left. What a way to gain a true understanding of the atmosphere that inspired many of his famous works.
After the guided part of your tour has ended, take some time to reflect on your time travel as you check out the many shops and grab a bite to eat in this impressive "Federal City."
What difference does a year make?
When Ludwig van Beethoven's father was promoting his son's first concert, he didn't realize the confusion one little white lie would cause for his young child years later. The senior Beethoven must have thought that being a seven-year-old child prodigy was not as impressive as being just six, so he lied about his son's age. From then on, Ludwig was never certain of his exact age. As if he didn't have enough to deal with, now he had an identity crisis.
