Classic Cologne Guided Walking Tour with Cathedral Visit
- Guided walk: A good guide is everything in a city with as much to see as Cologne, and a GoBe guide is all about you. Ask questions. Get personal attention. If the group goes for it, we can adjust the itinerary.
- Old Town: Don't just sightsee. See why the sights are important – the 15th-century town hall, St. Martin Church, statues and fountains, the two famous markets, and more.
- Cologne Cathedral: Once the world's tallest building, now Germany's most-visited site, this Gothic colossus is an almost overwhelming architectural and cultural achievement, inside and out. Priority 1 on any tour.
About this Cologne Tour
The good thing about this visit to Cologne's iconic cathedral is a GoBe guide who can answer any question. The hard part can be phrasing one coherently. The enormity of the place – not just its physical scale, but the scale of the endeavor behind it – can leave you flabbergasted.
Right at the start, in 1248, Cologne learned the hard way that there are no shortcuts to perfection: As they systematically dismantled their old church, they set a fire meant to take down one section – and burned the whole place down.
They now had no place to worship, but they did have a blank slate. And slowly, over six centuries, a masterpiece rose by the Rhine. Its twin spires would reach heights of 515 feet, while the artistry of their ornate Gothic detailing surpassed the heights of imagination.
All of this and more will be explained, understood, and appreciated better when you can stand at the foot of those towers, and when you can see the treasures inside: the gleaming gold Shrine of the Three Kings, said to hold the remains of the Magi; the Gero Cross; the vibrant stained glass; the relics in the actual Treasury. It's an experience that will leave you awed. Perhaps inspired. But certainly impressed by what humans can imagine and achieve – if hard-pressed to put your feelings into words.
The unknown sculptor who carved a revolution
The Gero Cross, commissioned by Cologne's Archbishop Gero around 965, is one of many cathedral treasures of outsize significance. The six-foot gilded oak carving was the first life-size depiction of Christ's death. It may be the first Western image of a dead Christ on the cross, and its brutal realism – slumped head, twisted body, closed eyes – represented a complete departure from the idealized depictions of the time. The unknown sculptor's suffering motif soon became the norm.
