About this Dusseldorf Tour
Everything Alt is new again.
The traditional brew of this region of the Rhine is being discovered around the world, with breweries opening in Britain, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa and the U. S. –from Texas and North Carolina to Maryland, Michigan, and Alaska.
But if Dusseldorfers knew about the Altbier boom, they'd burst that bubble. The way they see it, there's only one place to get it: the 260 or so places – pubs, restaurants, and brew houses – in the one-square-kilometer heart of Old Town. It's like going to Mumbai for strudel, or to Rome for sushi.
No. You only get a proper Altbier here, where you can be sure it's properly "top-fermented" – aged longer, at a cooler temperature which in itself is an old brewing style). Then it's served by special waiters in a special glass, with the understanding that an empty glass begets a new one, schnell.
In the U.S., the top-selling beer is represented by a team of eight sturdy specimens of the Clydesdale breed. This tour isn't that. It's your own private barrel of Alt, on a relaxed carriage ride through the most scenic part of Dusseldorf. There won't be eight horses, and they won't be huge Clydesdales. But as anyone here will tell you, it's what's in the barrel that should be sturdy.
In brewing process, color, and pub customs, Altbier shares some similarities with Kolsch, brewed 20 miles south in Cologne. But don't say that in Dusseldorf. And don't order a Kolsch either, unless you want to be treated like some kind of uncivilized boor. The Rhine country neighbors are far from neighborly; ordering an Alt in Cologne earns equal disdain there.
