About this Santorini Tour
The Greek island of Santorini is a jewel in the Aegean Sea, and one of the most exquisite locations in the country. Because of the seaside location and the amazing architecture of the 35-square-mile island, its scenery has been the subject of many stunning photographs. So it is fitting that this beautiful island also contains some of the most beautiful art around.
And it's a family affair when it comes to art here at the AK Asimis Kolaitou Art Galleries. Christophoros Asimis is a painter, his wife Eleni Kolaitou is a sculptor and jewelry designer, and their son Katonas Asimis also paints. Christophoros Asimis has been called a modern-day Michelangelo. Asimis has painted both landscape artworks of Santorini and the religious frescoes at Fira's Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral.
In this GoBe tour, learn how to paint and draw from Christophoros or Katonas Asimis. No previous experience required. Your day starts as you meet with your local guide and take a mini-bus to the galleries. This location contains not just the family's own art, but work from local Santorini artists inspired by the island's colors.
Put your nerves aside, as your teachers are at the top of their game. After you learn about their works, you'll head to their workshop where you'll receive expert tips on how to create your own art.Once you're done with your own stunning creation, your artwork will be matted and framed so that you can take it home. What better way to fully appreciate the beauty of this magical isle than to bring home a piece of it of your own making? Wow.
Fact or fiction?
Explorer Jacques Cousteau, the man who co-developed the first commercially successful scuba diving gear ("Aqua-Lung) in 1943, and thus opened up the oceans for exploration, was also a romantic. He came to Santorini in 1975, not to soak up the Aegean sun, but to investigate the origins of Atlantis. Yes, Atlantis, the fictional island described by Plato that fell out of favor with the gods and sunk into the sea. The results of Cousteau's archeological diving expedition were inconclusive, but that's not to say Atlantis didn't really happen.
