About this Santorini Tour
Greek cuisine is one of the oldest food styles in the world, and it can also be one of the healthiest. Lots of fish, meat such as lamb, plenty of vegetables like eggplant and zucchini, olive oil, yogurt, cheeses, olives, lemons and lemon juice, wine, grains including pita bread, and herbs and spices are the main ingredients you'll see again and again in Greek food.
Greek recipes are generally simple, with fresh, local ingredients being the real star. And the island of Santorini has its own twist on Greek cuisine. It was created thanks to the eruption of a nearby volcano 3,600 years ago, and the volcanic ash in the soil gives veggies their own unique taste. Couple that with 300 days of sunshine each year, and you have a plethora of produce, including white eggplant, capers, fava beans, and tomatoes, all grown without irrigation.
In this guided motorcoach tour, learn how to cook four different Greek recipes, made with those local ingredients. Then enjoy eating the dishes in a four-course meal, along with local wines, after they are made. Your day starts in the heart of Santorini, as you drive through the town's vineyards on the way to the village of Pyrgos where you'll arrive at your culinary destination: Selene. This fine dining location has been around since 1986 and provides a beautiful setting for your cooking demonstration. After all, Pyrgos is a truly magical place on a magical isle.
Bite into the apple of love
The island of Santorini is known for its vegetables. One of them is the Santorini white eggplant, or melitzana. This staple of local cuisine, which originated in Egypt, is called the "apple of love" by its supporters and is sweeter and juicier than other eggplants. When you see a whole Santorini eggplant on the vine, you would understand its name, as it looks like a big egg. This local delicacy is a staple of meals here, from mezes to entrees. Yum.
