      About this Akureyri tour

Slip into something extremely comfortable: the Nature Baths at Lake Myvatn, a smattering of crystalline lagoons nestled alongside Akureyri's stunning volcanic lake. Milky diamonds in a mountainous landscape, their soothing geothermal waters will ease you right into a state of bliss.

Clouds of steam rise off the glassy surface as you slink into the naturally heated baths, with nothing but a sprinkling of slate-colored rocks to obstruct your view of the sky-blue horizon. The bubbling baths are naturally heated and the water drawn from a geothermal spring almost a mile under the earth's surface reaches the pools at a delightful 99 degrees.

Untouched by any manmade chemicals, the baths are rich in silica, sulfur and microorganisms that heal the skin and spirit. Dip into the organic pools or take a seat inside the wood-paneled steam houses. Opt for a massage poolside or inside the bathing lagoon. Dine on the terrace of the Kvika restaurant, and enjoy the view.

Your tour ends with a scenic drive along Lake Myvatn and a brief stop at the roaring Godafoss falls. Despite all their might, today Godafoss will rage quietly in your head, as you meditate on your peaceful afternoon and the sheer beauty of Akureyri's countryside.

      Stripped clean

Icelanders expect fellow bathers to shower with soap, in the buff, before stepping into a communal bath – mainly because their natural geothermal pools aren't treated with chlorine. Though private bath facilities are available, it's not unusual to strip down alongside your bath mates in the locker room. Just make sure you put your swimsuit on before heading out to the baths.
