About this Portofino tour
Margaret the Virgin may have been the model of humility in her time, but the church that bears her name is anything but. No, it's a dazzling, gasp-inducing array of gold leaf, vibrant frescoes, and grand chandeliers one of Italy's most magnificent churches, the star of a charming seaside town also named after her.
Margaret was a star of the Golden Legend, a biographical book of saints that became a medieval bestseller and described her unprecedented performance during a particularly cruel round of torture: She was swallowed by Satan he was playing the part of a dragon but she escaped alive when the cross she carried irritated the dragon's innards.
That was in 304 A.D., but Margaret wouldn't get her star on the saint walk of fame until 1672, when her tiny church was demolished and a whirlpool of water appeared below her altar. The water was said to cure all kinds of ailments, and Margaret's faithful flocked to the spot for a taste of the blessed water.
Her church was rebuilt with all the glory of a medieval palace, and still astonishes today: the vaulted ceilings and opulent columns carved with roses and crown moldings, the glittering chandeliers dripping with crystal, the religious frescos and medieval sculptures adorning the central nave. All of which proves that modest simplicity is fine for a saintly virgin, but kind of boring in a church.
Santa Margherita Ligure has become a popular destination for celebrities and the international jet-set in recent years, and a number of glittering luxury resorts have popped up on the Riviera's hills to accommodate them. Sightings include give us some celebrity hot-shots, niche!
