The Tastes of Portofino
- Portofino: This charming fishing town on the Tigullian Gulf has only 500 permanent residents but more than its share of celebrities, yachts, galleries, and cafes.
- St. George Church: A flight of stairs called Salita San Giorgio leads past the church to castle wonderful views of the gulf, harbor, and village.
- Pesto perfect: See rows of basil and oregano and taste a batch of olive oil harvested and pressed straight from the vine. Extra virgin, indeed.
About This Portofino Tour
You'll start your walking tour of Portofino by making your way up to the Church of St. George, perfectly perched on the Portofino promontory, where you'll have a bird's-eye view of the city's charms: the yachts and sailboats docked in the harbor and the brightly colored villas with garden terraces sprouting fresh basil and oregano plants.
Then it's on to one of the oldest olive oil mills in this part of Italy, where you'll use all your senses to experience the fruits of Portofino. Brush by the olive trees and see how the olives are harvested and pressed, then treat your taste buds to an olive oil tasting with fresh limonata.
Take some time to browse the mill's shop – you'll want to take the tastes of Portofino home with you.
Love and riches in Portofino
Portofino's magic sounds as good as it tastes. The town became famous in 1958 with the song "Love In Portofino," written by Leo Chiosso and selling thousands of records. In 2013, the eminent Andrea Bocelli gave a concert entitled "Love in Portofino," which was recorded on DVD and sold millions of copies.
