About this Belfast tour
Your journey along Ireland's northern coast, with its rolling countryside and thrashing sea, will bring you to the mythical land of the Giant's Causeway, a mass of hexagonal basalt columns packed so tightly and perfectly together that nature must have had a giant helping hand. Or so the legend goes.
Among the rocky cliffs and hills of the medieval kingdom of Ulster there lived giants, men as tall and strong as the gargantuan rocks along Ireland's coast. They could scale cliffs and move mountains; their very steps shook the earth. There, along the Antrim coast, giant Finn McCool stood tall.
Finn kept close watch on his most fearsome enemies, the giants living far across the North Channel in Scotland; he particularly hated Benandonner, who constantly taunted him from his perch on the Scottish coast. Finally, Finn challenged Benandonner to a fight, and he built a causeway of six-sided cobblestones, urging his rival giant to cross it and meet his match.
As the story goes, Benandonner and Finn never had that fight, but they did come to an unspoken truce: The giants tore up the causeway, forever separating their two kingdoms and leaving thousands of stepping stones along the ragged shore. On your trip to Giant's Causeway, you can walk in their footsteps and feel like a giant among ordinary humans.
Behind every great man
The cowardly Finn only escaped his battle with Benandonner thanks to his clever wife. After Finn saw Benandonner's size, he went to his wife for help to avoid battling his gigantic opponent. She disguised him as a baby and laid him in a cradle. When Benandonner got a glimpse of the size of the "baby," he retreated in terror just imagining the size of the father.
