About this Oporto tour
Stacked scenically on the hills that overlook the Douro River, Porto is still something of an undiscovered European gem – lots of facets and an aura of mystery. This tour will help you decode some of its secrets.
Arriving by van at Cordoaria Garden, you and your GoBe guide will set out on foot into the historic UNESCO World Heritage city center. You'll marvel at the masterfully designed 245-ft. Clerigos Tower dating from 1763, once the country's tallest structure and still Porto's icon – visible from anywhere in town. And pass the magnificent Lello Bookshop (as much an architectural shrine as it is a temple of books, with over 120,000 titles.)
You'll stroll broad Aliados Avenue, with its ornate domed buildings and central promenade. And be greeted at Bolhão Market by a cavalcade of aromas – flowers, fresh fruit, warm bread, and musky cheeses – as you enter this raucous and thriving historic marketplace.
With time at your leisure along Santa Catarina Street, where the chic boutiques are, you'll shift into cosmopolitan mode. At vast São Bento Station – which took nearly a generation to build – you'll be astonished by the artistry of the place. Inside, the blue and white floor-to-ceiling azulejo tile murals are a must-photograph.
After a lift by van into the ancient Ribeira quarter, you'll have free time to wander the rustic riverfront, explore winding lanes, and enjoy views of the Douro, its arching bridges, and the rabelo boats that once carried Port barrels from the vineyards upriver. If that whets your appetite for a taste of the delightful aperitif, you'll have no problem finding an obliging cafe.
Belles and (train) whistles
Modern architecture has become very exciting, but nothing might ever compare to the sheer grandeur that came to train stations during the Belle Epoque years as the 20th century dawned. Porto's prime example is the São Bento Station, all formal stonework lines outside and incomparable floor-to-high-ceiling artistry inside. Long before airports and highways, train stations were the grand entrance to every great world city. This one still is.
