About this Appenzell Tour
If you've ever dreamed of strolling through a village straight out of a fairy tale, welcome to Appenzell. Tucked into the rolling Alpine landscape, this picture-perfect village, the cultural center of the smallest Swiss canton, still follows the rural customs and traditions of yore, like the ceremonial descent of the cows from mountain pastures each fall. So if you think you hear the echo of yodel-ay-ee-ooo from the hills, it's not your imagination!
Walking is the best way to explore this car-free village. Amble along the Hauptgasse (main street) to view the hand-painted frescoes that adorn the facades of Appenzell's homes and shops. Take a turn around the historic town square, the tongue-twisting Landsgemeindeplatz, where shops tempt with local handicrafts and culinary treats.
While your guide will tell you about the region's centuries-old way of life, you can see more at the Appenzell Museum, housed in a 400-year-old home. Exhibits range from traditional folk music and alpine cattle drives to Silvesterchlaus, which puts a medieval spin on the New Year's mummer parade. Your tour may also take you past artwork by Appenzell's own Roman Signer, a visual artist known for his "action sculptures."
Cuckoo for cookies?
Fuel your Appenzell adventure with a local treat like biber. (No relation to Justin!) Thisthick gingerbread cookie (aka AppenzellerBarli-Biber) is filled with almond paste, baked in charming wooden molds, and glazed in honey. Other area specialties include Appenzeller cheese (a brined, hard, cow's-milk cheese) and AppenzellerAlpenbitter, a 100% natural spirit made from 42 herbs. But don't ask for the recipe. It's been a family secret for over a century. Can't decide? You can never go wrong with Swiss chocolate.
Please meet in the lobby/reception area of your hotel. Be sure to indicate the name of your hotel at check-out so we know where to meet you. Your guide will be holding a sign with your name on it.
