About this Bern Tour
This city may have the world's most charming traffic obstacles. As you walk its medieval streets admiring impressive landmark architecture, your eye will be drawn to scores of colorful fountains, many located right in the middle of busy streets.
Most fountains date from the mid-1500s, when they were built to replace wooden versions. They showcased the city's wealth and its talent for adding symbolic artistry to a practical object meant for everyday use. For centuries, these fountains were a meeting place for the Bernese to wash, draw drinking water, and, of course, share the latest gossip.
Your entertaining guide points out the most fascinating fountains and helps decode the stories behind their fantastic allegorical figures. The Justice Fountain, for example, brandishes a sword in one hand and scales in the other to demonstrate the power of justice. The Samson Fountain represents the Bible's story of Samson killing a lion. The frightening Ogre Fountain depicts a giant swallowing a child, while others in a sack at his feet await the same fate. Perhaps this one was a warning for misbehaving children?
Fountains are the pride of this city. Historic fountains are regularly repainted in their original bright colors. And you'll see modern fountains gracing the front of the Parliament Building, where an award-winning granite plaza features 26 water jets (one for each member state of the Swiss Confederation). There's no shortage of symbolic fountains on this walking tour, or places to refill your water bottle as you chat with your guide about the many charms of Bern.
