About this Lucerne Tour
The city. The lake. The mountains. With swoon-worthy surroundings such as these, you'll have little difficulty imagining why local legend proclaims an angel shone a light to Lucerne's first settlers, decreeing the very spot on which they built the chapel that launched this popular destination. Indeed, located in the heart of Europe, Lucerne is considered the Swiss centerpiece, and broadly adored as nothing less than divine.
No wonder, then, that Lucerne has long lured some of history's most glorious luminaries, like Queen Victoria, Goethe, and Mark Twain. Join your GoBe guide to walk in their steps, along the impossibly beautiful shores of Lake Lucerne, at the foot of the breathtaking Alps. Here, history stretching back to 750 dwells side by side with postmodern enterprises. The result? A fascinating panorama that's yours to worship.
Lucerne's most iconic landmark remains the Kapellbrucke, or Chapel Bridge, a wooden footbridge constructed in the early 1300s to ward off lakeside attacks. Painted panels added 300 years later portray regional history, including the lives of the city's patron saints, who must have protected it during a wicked 20th-century fire so it now stands as the oldest survivor of its kind.
The bridge's Wasserturm, or Water Tower, has been an archive, a treasury, a prison and a torture chamber. Today, city sources say, it's the country's most-photographed monument. But Lucerne touches senses beyond sight, presenting an aural spectacle ranging from the town's oldest clock on the Musegg Wall, which has the honor of chiming the hour one minute before all others, to the near-perfect acoustics of the "new" KKL Luzern (Culture and Convention Centre Lucerne). Sublime!
The soothing sounds of Guggenmusigen
Dubbed "The Festival City," Lucerne boasts a calendar packed with party time. Some expected, such as folklore-based events celebrating cheese, yodeling, and Alpine culture. Others, maybe not so much. (Hellooo, Blue Balls Festival. It's a big, funky music fest, we swear.) The annual Carnival shows the city's taste for the bizarre, when hordes of strange, masked, costumed performers take to the streets and strike up a jubilant cacophony.
