About this Tessin Tour
Palm trees, piazzas, olive trees, polenta. Wait a minute, are we still in Switzerland? Yes! Say ciao to Lugano, the largest Italian-speaking city outside of Italy. Lugano is located in the Ticino region, Switzerland's southernmost canton, which is bordered on three sides by Italy's Piedmont and Lombardy regions. Once you meet your local guide in Lugano's main square, the neoclassical Piazza della Riforma, you'll be quickly immersed in la dolce vita.
With its mild, sunny climate, it's easy to forget that this lovely Mediterranean-style city is 100% Swiss until you look out over its glacial lake to Monte Bre and Monte San Salvatore. The spot for panoramic views, day or night, is Parco Ciani, a tranquil lakeside park featuring flower gardens, sculpture, and exotic trees. Ask your guide to point out Campione d'Italia, an Italian enclave that is completely surrounded by Swiss territory. Whether you're an art connoisseur or just love looking at beautiful creations, you'll find this historic center boasts terrific art and architecture.
Perched along Lake Lugano is the Church of St. Mary's of the Angels, a simple building that houses the city's best frescoes, including the gloriously detailed and colorful The Passion and Crucifixion of Christ by the Italian Renaissance artist Bernardino Luini. Look for it on the wall that separates the nave from the altar area. Your tour continues to Lugano's historic city center, where you'll stroll along the chic Via Nassa, lined in boutiques, antiquarian bookshops, and jewelers. It's also a popular stopping point for an aperitif, chocolate, or gelato. Lagano e unabellacitta.
Not your typical man cave
If "grotto" brings to mind a dark, dank cave, you haven't experienced a Ticinese grotto. A beloved aspect of Ticino's laidback lifestyle, grottoes are rustic taverns set in shady, out-of-the-way spots. Dine "picnic style" under the trees like the locals do, on homemade salami, risotto, polenta, and veal tonne. Enjoy a small jug (called a boccalino) of Merlot produced in Ticino's wine region or Gazzosa, a fizzy drink made with lemons from the Amalfi coast. Cap your meal with zabaglione or peaches marinated in wine. Mangia!
