About this Zurich Tour
District 4 may be the real heart of Zurich. It's pulsing with creativity, art, and the sense of people living life to the max. Delve into this exotic world with a savvy local guide. You'll be caught up in the energy of the neighborhood, once home to the city's working class, and discover how it evolved into a trendy center of multicultural urban living.
This is the city's design district, where artists and galleries infuse creativity into the cultural melting pot all around the Langstrasse. Your guide knows it well and can help you spot those rare and intriguing artisan items you won't find anywhere else. If you love fashion, art, and jewelry, this is your shopping sweet-spot. There's not a cuckoo clock or souvenir cowbell in sight.
The district's culinary cognoscenti are dishing updelights to brighten the city's dining scene. Trendy bars and hip restaurants keep the industrial vibe of the old neighborhood alive while creating stylish spaces and new flavors from uber-creative chefs. If you consider Swiss food a bit tired, the scene here will flip your thinking faster than neon illuminates these foodie hot spots.
Like all neighborhoods in transition, Kreis 4 has its worries. Where creativity thrives, rents and property values typically rise, so there's concern that affordable spaces may become hard to find. If those living and workinghere move on and the mainstream moves in, the soul of the district may ebb away with them. Go while the artistic tide is high.
Colloquially, District 4 is known as Chreis Cheib, which sounds just fine until you discover that cheib means animal cadaver in Zurich German. Once upon a time, dead animals were taken to this district to be buried in pits. (Don't worry, it was all a long, long time ago.) Another name for the district is Aussersihl. Perhaps you'll want to use that instead.
