About this Zurich Tour
Silent stones can tell stories from centuries past. Even in the midst of a major international banking city. All you need is attuned senses and a savvy GoBe guide to walk you through Old Town's archeological wonders. Ready to eavesdrop?
You'll hear that times were good in 13th-century Zurich. It had a flourishing economy, thanks to a prosperous silk trade, and had become a free imperial city. It began building its famous city walls in the early 1200s, enclosing almost 100 acres. Venture under the city to explore remains of the once-mighty fortifications that defended it for centuries.
Running your fingers over the old stones, you'll feel the echoes of a fascinating history. This foundation stood here solidly as the wall was torn down in 1834 because the city outgrew the space confined within it. And it's kept stoic watch for almost 200 years since then as Zurich's urban development spilled far beyond its original walls.
More secrets await below the city as we delve into history's unsanitary side at Ehgraben. In this elusive place (you'll need your guide to find it), we'll slip into a centuries-old sewage system. Don't worry, it's been dry for decades. You'll get a picture of the dubious hygiene during medieval Zurich, complete with amusing illustrated panels and entertaining commentary from your guide. You'll see the humor in this, we promise.
Centuries of exciting discovery unfold in just two hours as you explore a wealth of Old Town's historic findings. Open your mind to whispers from the past and set the archeologist within you free.
Archeologists are experts at dating
In 2015,at a site near Zurich's Fraumunster church, archeologists unearthed a metal insignia depicting Holy Roman Emperor Charlemagne at the graves of city patron saints. It's an impressive 600 years old, but no record for a relic. A 2010 dig prior to building the Opera House parking garage uncovered a wood door dating to 3063 B.C. The 5,100 year-old-door, one of the oldest discovered in Europe, is a window into Neolithic village life.
