About This Safaga Tour
This in-depth cultural immersion includes ancient Egypt's most significant sites, a sightseeing drive, a sumptuous lunch, and thousands of years of history. All in a day. Talk about cultural values.
A visit to Karnak is a journey into the heart of ancient Egypt. This huge complex of temples, the largest ever constructed in the world, was the center of faith and most sacred place at Thebes (modern-day Luxor). Developed over 2,000 years, it grew into an enormous collection of statuary and temple structures, most built by powerful pharaohs between 1570 and 1090 B.C. Let your imagination soar as you wander and imagine the grandeur of this sacred place centuries ago.
Hidden under the parched and rocky gorge called the Valley of the Kings are the tombs of nearly 70 pharaohs and royal family members. (The tombs are open for visits on a rotating basis.) Discovering and restoring the treasures here has kept archeologists busy for two centuries. What they found will keep your imagination in overdrive as you enter the hushed tombs and discover the ornate wall carvings and paintings.
You may need your GoBe guide's help in deciphering the mysterious hieroglyphics you see on walls and columns. But experiencing the Avenue of Sphinxes at Karnak or the 60-foot-high Colossi of Memnon needs no interpretation. After centuries, these sites still have the power to overshadow many wonders of the modern world.
Just how big is Karnak?
Your guide will tell you the Karnak Temple is the largest place of worship in history. Yet it's hard to imagine its immensity. It covers about 200 acres, equal to about 200 American football fields. And the great temple at its heart is so vast that it could hold three of the world's largest cathedrals. St. Peter's Basilica at the Vatican, the massive Milan Cathedral, and Paris' Notre Dame Cathedral would all fit inside.
Please exit the port terminal building or go to the end of the tender pier drop-off to meet your guide. Look for our displayed logo sign. Staying at a hotel? Be sure to advise the GoBe Crew so we can meet you in the lobby.
A motorized wagon train will transport you from the parking lot to the entrance gate of the Valley of the Kings, otherwise it's an uphill walk. The visit to the Tomb of King Tutankhamun at the Valley of the Kings requires an extra ticket, not included in the price of this tour. The use of camera/video is totally prohibited at the Valley of the Kings and inside the tombs. The use of camera and video is free of charge at all other sites visited during this tour.
Plan to walk for about a mile. Expect uneven gravel ground with stones/boulders at the Valley of the Kings. If your mobility is limited, this tour may be too challenging for you to enjoy and maintain the pace of the group. It is not wheelchair accessible.
