      About this Ashdod Tour

If you love diamonds, Bursa is diamond heaven. Israel's Diamond Exchange District is a complex of four buildings, including the 32-story Diamond Tower, where stones are bought and sold, and where dreams are cut and shaped by extraordinary diamond cutters.

But how did such a young country become the "World Diamond Center"?

Efforts began in 1905, long before there was a State of Israel. But for 30 years, attempts to develop and promote the diamond industry in Israel netted frustrating results. Finally, when the British Mandate lifted the customs levy on diamond imports to Israel in 1936, the Israeli industry began to flourish.

Israel's geographic location helped Bursa succeed. The Exchange is strategically convenient to the importation of rough stones from Africa, and the exportation of polished diamonds to markets in Europe and Asia. An increasing reputation for quality did the rest.

In 1956, just 20 years after the lifting of the levy, Israel made history. For the very first time, it was chosen as the venue for the International Congress of the World Federation of Diamond Bourses.

Today, the Israel Diamond Exchange complex comprises an area of over 850,000 square feet.  More than 1,050 firms work together under the concept of "everything under one roof." This means that, in addition to diamond importers and producers, there are ancillary companies in shipping, banking, insurance, official government business, and more.

In fact, Bursa is so well equipped that it even has an on-site medical treatment center –  handling $10 billion worth of diamond exports can take its toll in stress.

      Street art

Your Tel Aviv tour includes Rothschild Boulevard, one of the oldest streets in the city. The wide thoroughfare is lined by many Bauhaus buildings. When you get to Allenby Street, keep your camera ready for the Lederberg house. Built in 1925, it features four large ceramic murals of a Jewish pioneer sowing and harvesting, a shepherd, and Jerusalem, with a quote from Jeremiah 31:4, "Again I will rebuild thee and thou shall be rebuilt."
