About this Saguenay, Quebec tour
Cows graze contently in the lush, green fields of the Saguenay River valley. Berries ripen on neat rows tucked amid the hills and dales. It's a pleasant sight to see. But tasting the products from this peaceful landscape? That's even better.
Families who love this land nurtured the businesses you'll visit on this tour. The winery, Domaine Le Cageot, began in the 1970s when land was cleared and ploughed to create a berry farm. Over the years, it's grown to include an artisanal vineyard and to produce wines, aperitifs, and spirits from its berries. Now the winery welcomes you, shares its story, and offers a taste of delicious blueberry wine. Now, too, there are medals that honor their products – and their years of hard work.
In a region known for great cheese, you'll taste some of the best at Fromagerie Boivin. Now run by the third and fourth generations of Boivins, it produces a variety of cheeses, including its popular cheddar and "squeaky cheese" (we explain that below). And there's something new in the works – or in the water. This is the only Quebec dairy with hundreds of pounds of cheese ripening deep below the Saguenay River. Be sure to check the progress of their new L'Abysse du Fjord (abyss of the Fjord) cheese when you visit.
Popping a cork and nibbling cheese – always a perfect duo, especially when paired with views of the scenic Saguenay River, a historic stone paper mill, and other picturesque local sights. Lots of big-name places may claim their spot on the wine and cheese country map. But this little corner of Quebec is one of the friendliest and prettiest anywhere.
Some cheese should squeak like a mouse
Mild, slightly salty cheese curds are lumps of fresh cheese that are not yet pressed or aged. In this part of Canada, they're a popular snack and an ingredient of poutine, a concoction of French fries, cheese curds, and gravy. Fresh cheese curds squeak when you bite into them – and that's a good thing. In fact, the fresher they are, the louder they squeal.
