About This Boston Tour
An ordinary-appearing bench overlooks the pond in the Public Garden. What makes this one special is that Matt Damon and Robin Williams chatted here during their memorable scene in the 1997 coming-of-age movie, Good Will Hunting. Since Williams' death in 2014, fans pay homage in this quiet spot. Their messages and lines from the movie scrawled on the wooden seat seem to keep the comedian's spirit alive.
This is just one of the memorable spots along Movie Mile, a vast montage of famous locations. From distinctive neighborhoods and rich heritage to gritty, blue-collar realism, Boston gives filmmakers a setting and atmosphere that could never be created on a backlot. And each location has its story. You'll go behind the scenes as your guide shares little-known facts – and a few salacious details – about the stars, casts, and crew.
Live a day in the life of the eccentric lawyers at the fictional firm of Cage, Fish & Associates as you see where the Emmy-winning series Ally McBeal was filmed. Admire one of the country's oldest libraries, the Boston Athenaeum, seen in A Civil Action and With Honors. Follow the footsteps of Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway in The Thomas Crown Affair, and zoom in on locations from Martin Scorsese's The Departed, MTV's Real World, and Blown Away, and many more starring spots.
Wind up your reel-to-real journey with a drink at the Bull & Finch, the bar used for exterior shots in Cheers. Hollering "Norm!" as you walk through the door is optional.
Life imitates art
When Cheers producers went looking for the ideal location, they picked Boston for its spirited pubs, lively sports scene, and even livelier politics. The Bull & Finch, part of this tour, was declared perfect for Cheers' façade. After the show premiered in 1982, fans soon discovered the "real Cheers." Since then, the Bull & Finch has changed its name to Cheers – and a replica of the TV bar has opened in nearby Faneuil Hall.
Please make your way outside the Boston Common Visitors Center located at 139 Tremont St., Boston at least 15 minutes before scheduled start time.
