About this Boston, Massachusetts tour
"Hee-haw, hee-haw." Wait a minute, is this a barnyard or an aquarium? What you're hearing is the "bray" of the endangered African Penguin, nicknamed the jackass penguin for pretty obvious reasons. It's among the fascinating animals you'll get to know at one of the nation's top oceanariums for children. But you don't have to be a kid to fall in love with these tuxedoed cuties or those adorable harbor seals either.
For its sheer size alone, the recently renovated four-story Giant Ocean Tank is a must-see. This attraction is so big that it was built first and then the aquarium was constructed around it. The tank holds a coral reef, more than 1,000 animals, and 200,000 gallons of salt water. Watch the dazzling parade of stingrays, moray eels, midnight parrotfish, yellow goatfish, barracuda, and guitarfish (also called the banjo shark).
Your day will be strumming along as you marvel at everything from the good old American lobster to the fearsome green anaconda. You can get your ninja turtle on and join the aquarium's turtle rescue team, or take time to gently pet a cownose ray or epaulette shark at the newest touch tank. Now that you're humming Under the Sea, finish your experience with a dive into a mind-blowing IMAX underwater adventure. With its uniquely curved and oversized screen, IMAX puts you into the depths of the action. Gives the expression "swimming with the sharks" a whole new meaning, doesn't it?
The old lady of the sea
Meet Myrtle the green sea turtle, the star of the Giant Ocean Tank and a resident of the aquarium since 1970. Green sea turtles are known for their ability to hold their breath for a very long time (up to 5 hours) and living to be centenarians. So is the 80-year-old Myrtle the new 60? Maybe the secret to her longevity and svelte 500-pound figure is her diet: lettuce, cabbage, squid, and Brussels sprouts. Sounds like a new diet trend.
Please make your way to the New England Aquarium/IMAX1 Central Wharf (adjacent to the Marriott Hotel), Boston, MA 02110.
Your tour of the Aquarium is self-guided. You are welcome to take pictures, however tripods are not permitted in the Aquarium. Your IMAX ticket is valid for standard (45 minute in length) IMAX presentations - Arrive 15-20 minutes before show time.

The Aquarium has a limited number of wheelchairs that may be borrowed free of charge. They are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Wheelchair-accessible seating is located at the top of the theatre.
