About This Charleston, South Carolina Tour
Charming coastal Charleston wears its long-storied history proudly. This jewel of the South boasts over 300 years' worth of impressive history, public architecture, insanely sprawling residences, and magnolia-scented gardens. Sit back and enjoy listening to fascinating insider tidbits, all told with characteristic charm and levity, as you pass by one historic hot spot after another.
Be ready to stand at attention when your touring car stops at the Citadel, the exclusive military college established in 1842. Discover the College of Charleston – founded in 1770, it is the state's oldest institution of higher learning. Marvel at the imposing structures of St. Michael's Church, Charleston City Hall, the county and federal courthouses, and the post office at the intersection of Meeting and Broad Streets, nicknamed the "Four Corners of Law" by Robert Ripley, believe it or not. Nearby, view the impressive Old Exchange and Provost Dungeon buildings.
Visit the most desired zip code in all of Charleston, the Battery, which fronts expensive homes along the waterfront. Snap photos along the scenic harbor and appreciate the architecture. Marvel at the structures of another neighborhood, Rainbow Row, where homes look like they've been dipped in Easter egg dye. Learn the fascinating stories behind the Mazyck-Wraggborough garden district and historic Harleston Village.
Wrap up your tour at Old City Market, where you'll have time to wander around, shop, and dine at one of Charleston's many fine restaurants. Who knows, you might find your own valuable bit of Charleston history to take home and impress your family and friends.
A tisket, a tasket, a Gullah sweetgrass basket
One of the most popular items sold at the Old City Market in Charleston is the sweetgrass basket hand-woven from Gullahs. These African Americans, whose ancestors were Africans who escaped their enslavement, reside in the nearby Low Country area of South Carolina and Georgia. They have their own creole language originating from English and West and Central African tribal dialects, as well as their own very distinctive culture.
Please make your way to the US Customs House at 200 East Bay Street Charleston, SC to begin your adventure.
