About This Chicago Tour
Chicago is known for its music, especially jazz and the blues (and the Blues Brothers). It also has a strong gospel community and hosts an annual gospel festival. Fitting, given that many music historians give the Windy City the credit for being the birthplace of the music genre. While gospel music can trace its roots back to the sad days of slavery in the United States, the modern gospel movement started in Chicago.
Chicagoan Thomas A. Dorsey is considered the father of gospel music. A secular musician who performed barrelhouse piano under the name "Georgia Tom" in Al Capone's speakeasies, Dorsey was responsible for over 400 blues and jazz songs. But in the late 1920s, after enduring many hardships, he turned his music over to the Lord. He is responsible for writing classics like Take My Hand, Precious Lord and Peace in the Valley
On these weekend voyages, artists and groups like Ekklesia, JC, and Tecora Rogers perform inspirational music to bring a real spirit to the Spirit of Chicago weekend lunch cruises. You can enjoy a delicious meal, and then listen to the music. Dancing is strongly encouraged.
The views from this sailing vessel are as majestic as the music. Your day starts at Navy Pier, the Midwest's biggest travelers' destination. As the Spirit of Chicago sails down Lake Michigan, gaze at skyscrapers like Willis Tower, Aon Center, John Hancock Center, and Trump Tower. You'll also pass attractions like Grant Park, Millennium Park, and Shedd Aquarium. What a spirited day.
Mahalia Jackson, the "Queen of Gospel," took musical advice and toured for years with Thomas A. Dorsey. She preferred gospel because, as she once said, "I sing God's music because it makes me feel free. It gives me hope." Born in New Orleans in 1911, Jackson moved to Chicago when she was 16 and met Dorsey two years later. His Take My Hand, Precious Lord became her signature song. Jackson was actively involved with the U.S. civil rights movement, singing at both the 1963 March on Washington and at Martin Luther King's funeral.
