About this Juneau, Alaska tour
Aleut Indians explored these waters in their swift, able hunting boats called baidarkas. They knew – and you'll discover – that a kayak is the ultimate way to navigate Alaska's vast and enthralling beauty. We'll spend up to two hours paddling the coastal waterways and wetlands around North Douglas Island. Get ready for the thrill of exploring like a Native Alaskan.
Moving soundlessly through the waters, you can silently approach wildlife and have a chance to get up close to porpoise, seals, sea lions, eagles, herons, or even whales. Sharing the waters with these wild creatures, you know this is why you came to Alaska. Sitting so low in the water, you see far, far into its clear depths. And, floating in just a few inches, you easily navigate to shore for intimate sightings of land-based wildlife.
You're experiencing the coast as only an ocean adventurer can. We'll explore the Mendenhall Wetlands (more than a 140 species of birds live here – how many will you spot?). Here you'll have the ultimate view of the mighty Mendenhall Glacier, about six miles away. The sight will have you lifting your paddle for a few moments to appreciate the majesty of this massive river of ice as it winds up through the mountain for miles.
As you glide through the waters native-style, your GoBe guide shares the joy of discovery, the coastal wonders, and the region's colorful heritage. You're dipping into a cultural journey through waters traversed by the Aleut's swift boats. It's said that in the hands of expert paddlers, Aleut kayaks traveled so speedily that birds couldn't outrun them. You may not paddle that fast. But you'll quickly embrace the spirit of sea kayaking.
Aleut baidarkas were constructed with wooden frameworks covered with sealskin. Knots of sinew tied the skin to the framework, and these knots were tied carefully and reverently to ensure strength and spirituality. Hulls were long and slender to slice quickly through the water, but roomy enough to carry supplies for week-long hunting trips. Fast, sleek, and strong, these kayaks were so light that even a child could carry them.
