About this Juneau, Alaska Tour
Lucky you. Your tour guide and brand new biking buddy, aged anywhere from 15 to 72, is also an enthusiastic Juneau resident who wants to tell you everything there is to know about the area. So strap on that helmet, get in the saddle, and make your way to the first camera stop at Chapel on the Lake by the banks of Auke for a breathtaking across-the-water perspective of Mendenhall Glacier.
After some fresh selfies and deep breaths of even fresher Alaskan air, it's back on your bike for a ride to the beach at Mendenhall Lake. On the shoreline of this glassy mile-wide, 220-foot deep body of water, your guide will share interesting information about the Juneau Icefield, Mendenhall Glacier, and the surrounding area, as well as share some snacks with the group so you can refuel for the next leg of the tour.
Pedal your way toward Tongass National Forest for a mile-long stretch of trail right through the rainforest. Wildlife lover? Keep an eye peeled for black bears, bald eagles, porcupines, beavers, and more native critters. Your final and most up-close vista of the glacier from its eastern flank. Stretch your legs and take a ton of snaps to dazzle all your friends and followers.
After that 8.5-mile bike ride, your quad muscles will enjoy a well-deserved rest as a van whisks you off to Merchant's Wharf. What used to be a seaplane hangar is now a gathering place for you to sip and savor award-winning beers from microbreweries all across Alaska. The hard part's done. So just sit back and hoist a glass to your three-in-one Juneau adventure.
As a remnant of the Little Ice Age, the blue-hued Mendenhall Glacier was formed over 3,000 years ago. Constantly in motion, the glacier has been leaving deposits all along its path, steadily filling the gap between Juneau and Douglas Island at an annual rate of one-half inch. In a few decades, Douglas won't even be an island anymore. As the glacier melts, a long-buried ancient forest is slowly being uncovered, solving one of history's geographic cold cases.
