About this Juneau, Alaska tour
Just hearing the word "Alaska" brings to mind its mighty glaciers – and the Mendenhall is one of the mightiest. It's a dozen miles long, with hundreds of awe-inspiring sights like glittering icefalls and towering rock pillars rising from the ice. Only small parts of the glacier can be seen from land or sea, so fly like a bird on this helitour and let our expert GoBe guide show you its wonders.
You'll cruise above twisted ice spires and deep crevasses that dominate the lower glacier. Gaining altitude, we may pass Mendenhall Towers, the rock sentinels that rise 4,000 feet out of the glacier. You'll also see the spectacular ice falls where the Juneau Icefield overflows to form the Mendenhall Glacier. It's the awe-inspiring sight you always imagined. And then some.
Alaska also means sled dogs, and they're mighty too. You've seen these Huskies race valiantly in the world-famous Iditarod across 1,000 miles of rugged terrain in all kinds of weather. Now you get to meet these dogs and the professional mushers, understand the bond and skill it takes to run that race, and know why this exciting sport is a treasured part of Alaska's heritage.
Glaciers and dogs come together in a thrilling way as you drive an energetic team. Or relax in the sled as the Huskies whisk you through their white world. However you go mushing, you'll be amazed at the dogs' speed, strength, and desire to run. After the ride there's time to chat with the mushers and to play with loveable pups. As the mushers say: Gee! Haw! Whoa! That was quite a day.
The spirit of Alaska
The Iditarod Trail began as a route linking coastal towns, interior mining camps, west coast communities, and Nome. While mail and supplies went in, gold came out – all thanks to the courageous mushers and their sled dogs. In 1925, diphtheria threatened Nome and the trail became a vital highway when serum had to reach the city. Mushers and dogs saved the day. Today they still brave the trail simply because they love it.
