About this Juneau, Alaska tour
The Auke tribe had no idea what was right under their feet when they first settled in Juneau, and it wasn't until the discovery of gold that the city was truly born. During the peak of the gold rush, Juneau was home to three of the largest gold mines in the world. As you embark on your journey through this fascinating city, you will strike historical gold as your guide shares the story of the Gold Rush, and how it changed Juneau forever.
Approximately 12 miles from the city of Juneau, you will approach one of the most magnificent sights in nature – the Mendenhall Glacier. This majestic river of ice spans nearly 12 miles in length, 1.5 miles in width, and is fed by the massive, 1,500 square mile Juneau Icefield. Enjoy breathtaking views, and rest your gaze upon the brilliant blue icebergs found cascading along the water. Or, visit the Mendenhall Glacier Visitors' Center, and uncover the mysteries behind these remarkable glaciers!
Did you know that glacier ice is the largest reservoir of fresh water on the planet, storing an estimated 75 percent of the world's supply? Yeah, let that blow your mind.
Mendenhall Glacier is named after the 19th century teacher and scientist, Thomas Corwin Mendenhall. Mendenhall is best known for leading America's conversion to the metric system. Unfortunately, Mendenhall didn't live to see a conversion happen. Or maybe we are converting ... just at a glacial pace.
