About this Juneau, Alaska tour
Get ready to be amazed – and entertained – by magnificent Humpback whales! You're guaranteed to see them as your skilled captain steers into Stephen's Passage, where they congregate to feed. These wonderful creatures, affectionately called "humpies," came close to extinction, so seeing them cavorting in the waters is a special treat. (Now protected, populations are growing so let's hope humpies will happily cavort forever.)
Once whales are sighted, your captain maneuvers the vessel for exceptional viewing and photo ops from the topside deck. You're often close enough to hear them breathe. Watch for these graceful giants to slowly arc their massive tails into the air before making a booming slap on the water. Weighing around 40 tons, they occasionally fully breach out of the water in an amazing display of acrobatic power. Have your camera ready!
Your onboard naturalist explains the humpies' behavior. You'll discover they're consuming up to a ton and half of food a day during this feeding season. In winter, they migrate south to warmer waters and don't eat at all. (They live off their blubber while they're busy mating and giving birth.) You'll also hear fascinating stories about the other wildlife you may encounter, including killer whales, sea lions, porpoise, harbor seals, and bald eagles.
For a different taste of wild Alaska, you'll navigate to a secluded island lodge for a feast of grilled wild salmon. This island feels like a wilderness haven. And not just for hungry adventurers like you. It's home to numerous species of wildlife and birds, so count how many you spot while scanning coast and skies with powerful scopes or strolling the shore. Your trusty captain's been steering you right. You're where the wild things are.
That's a whale of a tale
The Humpback's deeply notched tail can be up to 15 feet wide, and it makes a heck of a splash when the whale slaps it forcefully on the surface of the water. The rest of this mighty mammal is equally impressive. They grow to be about 52 feet long and weigh between 30 and 50 tons. Their heart alone weighs about 430 pounds – that's as much as three average adult humans.
