About this Kahului, Hawaii tour
From below the surf to high above the turf, walk with indigenous sea life without getting wet and look down at the Iao Valley on this unforgettable experience. Start your day off by getting the energy boosting vitamins you need for the day from the fruits found at the Maui Tropical Plantation. Enjoy samples as your stroll through gardens teeming with fresh mangos, papayas, kalo (the main ingredient for poi), macadamia nuts, coffee beans, sugarcane and more.
GoBe remembers what it's like to be young, so we make sure your plantation stop has something for everyone in the family. Kids can feed the ducks and fish, or explore the gift shop. Adults and kids alike will love indulging in some macadamia nut ice cream made fresh with local ingredients.
After the plantation you'll take a paved path through Iao Valley, where King Kamehameha famously clashed with Maui forces in the Battle of Kepaniwai. Your route leads all the way to the top of the Iao Needle, a natural rock formation that towers 1200 feet over the valley and the Iao Stream. The walk is relatively easy; especially when you consider the spectacular views from the top.
Finally, you'll get up close and personal with Hawaii's unique marine environment. The Maui Ocean Center is dedicated exclusively to animals who call Hawaii home, and many cannot be found anywhere else in the world. See one of the country's largest living coral collections, explore more than 60 exhibits and interpretive displays, and take the Underwater Journey through a transparent tunnel as sharks, sea turtles, and giant stingrays swim around you. On this unique experience two worlds collide as you walk amongst the sea life without even getting wet!
The Battle of Kepaniwai – or "dammed stream" – got its name from the extreme number of Maui warriors who blocked the Iao Stream after the battle. Luckily, the stream runs free and clear today; you only have to watch out for Pele, the goddess of fire, who sends bad luck to visitors who snatch rocks and natural artifacts from her land.
