About This Ketchikan Tour
This feisty town has its share of fishing boats, pleasure craft, kayaks, and seaplanes. They all need water to go anywhere. But now Ketchikan has something that can go everywhere – and take you on the city's best adventure. The "Duck" may be an unconventional way to get around, but you'll never forget this ride – or your guide who en-tour-tains you with lively and lusty frontier tales.
Touring by land, you'll see why this town is "The Salmon Capital of the World." View the salmon hatchery and Ketchikan Creek, thronged with salmon making their way upstream. The salmon ladder, a step-like structure, helps them navigate up the rushing waterfall. Watching these jumping salmon, you'll be amazed at their single-minded determination to make it back to their native streambed to spawn.
There's a famous saying around town that more men than fish once went upstream to spawn. That's because Creek Street was once crowded with bawdy houses and "ladies of the night." Prostitution was outlawed in the 1950s, yet historic Creek Street retains it colorful character with brightly painted buildings, tall totem poles, and art galleries.
Next, get ready to splash into the harbor. Your guide becomes a marine pilot and your vehicle transforms into a boat – how amazing is that? The Duck's plunge puts you front and center for great waterfront views, tales of the town's fishing heritage, and a chance to spot eagles, sea lions, or whales. But we'll understand if your favorite wild thing on this tour is the Duck – and the big splash you made in Ketchikan.
Lusty tales of hidden trails and high tides
Ketchikan's boardwalk Creek Street, once home to more than 30 bordellos, was complete with a "Married Man's Trail" – a back alley that men could use to discretely visit the "girls" without entering the houses' front doors. And to procure illegal libations during prohibition, boats stealthily slipped into the creek on the high tide to deliver liquor through trap doors hidden in the floors of the bordellos.
Please make your way to the Downtown Cruise Ship Terminal: booth #10 inside the Ketchikan Visitor's Bureau at berth two (2).
A souvenir Duck Whistle is available for purchase for $3.00 (cash only).
Travelers must be able to navigate 9 step boarding ladder (approx. 6 steps) to enter the vessel. Travelers are seated during the entire tour. Suitable for Travelers with limited mobility, but is not wheelchair-accessible.
