Step inside the glass-enclosed habitat and share the butterflies' world. They're flying freely all around you, like a colorful swirl of confetti in the air. You'll see them feeding on nectar from the flowers, or stopping to rest so you can admire their exquisite colors and patterns. A butterfly may even land on you -enjoy that charmed moment!
Butterflies are the winged wonders that pollinate and propagate all that grows around us. There's truth in the lovely saying that no garden blooms until butterflies flutter through it. Throughout the world, between 15,000 and 20,000 different species of butterfly soar the skies, but their numbers are diminishing due to habitat loss from construction and the widespread use of pesticides. The Conservatory's butterflies come from captive breeding programs that are beneficial to both the butterflies and the environment.
Friendly and knowledgeable guides, and an entire Learning Center, are close by to answer all your butterfly questions. But the delicate creatures dancing in the air may be the greatest teachers of all. They remind us how nature's simplest gifts, like a butterfly, can reawaken our sense of wonder.
Why butterfly, not flutter-by?
The source of the word "butterfly" winged away long ago, lost in the whimsies of the English language. Other languages have words to describe these graceful creatures more poetically papillon in French, farfalle in Italian, and fluture in Romanian. One story to explain our English word says that butter once actually flew, when wicked witches took on the shape of butterflies to steal away the butter and milk from a household.
