About this Key West, Florida tour
Ask any local. Getting out on the water is the epic way to see Key West. And doing it on a magnificent sailing ship, brimming with all the romantic character of the 19th century coupled with the smooth performance of the 21st is… well … even better.
Rigged with 3,600 square feet of sail assisted by eco-friendly electric propulsion for when the breezes don't cooperate, even a brief trip aboard America 2.0 will quickly carry you as far as a person can get from everyday life – and deep into a zone you'll remember long after your voyage is done. America's crew of seasoned seagoing professionals will see to your onboard needs. While the water, wind, and amazing sea air will take care of the rest.
You can expect picture-perfect views of Mallory Square and its Sunset Pier, where each evening brings a fresh celebration of life. And of historic "Fort Zach", the formidable red-brick National Historic Landmark that figured prominently in the Civil War and Spanish-American War.
Further out on the reef, where wrecks so often happened in bygone days, you'll see Sand Key Lighthouse rising from the shallows with its delicate open framework that lets wind and wave through. But not always…
In the clear waters, be on the lookout for friendly dolphin, who love riding the bow wave. Loggerhead, hawksbill, and green sea turtles who are often seen floating or flippering about. In the air, sooty terns, brown noddys, magnificent frigate birds, and masked boobys have been spotted.
All told, this promised to be an epic slice of an epic day on an epic ship in an epic place on Earth.
Well, maybe not any port in a storm
On October 11, 1846, Sand Key's lighthouse keeper – the colorful Joshua Appleby – was enjoying a visit from his daughter Eliza, her husband and young son, and two others. Unfortunately, a hurricane came visiting that day, too. A ferocious one. As the wave height built, the party apparently took refuge up in the tower since it had weathered past storms. Bad call. By the next day, nothing but reef remained on the spot where the light had once stood.
